The concept of health food

"Health food" is the unified name of a certain type of food in China, and there are many international names for health food, such as functional food (such as Japan), health food (such as European countries), dietary supplement (such as the United States), design food, pharmaceutical food, chemical prevention agent and plant compound. In China, there are also several terms such as "functional food", "curative food", "nutritional and health food", etc., which are relatively confusing. In 1996, the Ministry of Health of China promulgated and implemented the "Measures for the Administration of Health Food" for the first time to clarify the definition of health food: "Health food refers to food that shows that it has specific health functions, that is, it is suitable for specific groups of people to eat, has the function of regulating the body, and is not for the purpose of treating diseases." In 2003, the management of health food in China was transferred from the Ministry of Health to the State Food and Drug Administration. On July 1, 2005, the State Food and Drug Administration promulgated and implemented the Administrative Measures for the Registration of Health Foods (for Trial Implementation). The measures stipulate: "Health food refers to food that claims to have specific health care functions or is for the purpose of supplementing vitamins and minerals, that is, it is suitable for specific groups of people to eat, has the function of regulating the body, is not for the purpose of treating diseases, and does not cause any acute, subacute or chronic harm to the human body." The above latest definition is basically the same as the definition given by the Ministry of Health in 1996, but it further explains that health food is food that contains vitamins and minerals for the purpose of supplementing vitamins and minerals (nutrient supplements), and emphasizes the food safety of health food.
China's health food must apply for registration, and can only be called health food after being reviewed and approved by the State Food and Drug Administration. The health food logo stipulated in China is a sky blue pattern, known as the "blue hat", and the words "health food" are written below (see Figure 6-2).
Although the names of health foods vary from country to country, the basic view is the same, that is, health foods should have the following characteristics:
(1) Health food is first of all food rather than medicine, and should have the commonality of general food, that is, nutrition, sensory and safety. Medicines are used to treat diseases and allow for a certain degree of toxic side effects. However, health food is not for the purpose of treating diseases, does not pursue clinical treatment effects, and cannot promote therapeutic effects.

(2) Health food should be functional, that is, it should have at least one of the functions of regulating the function of health food in China Figure 6-2, such as immune regulation function, anti-aging function, memory improvement function, growth promotion function, anti-fatigue function, weight loss function, etc. Its function must be demonstrated by the necessary animal and/or human functional tests to demonstrate that it is clear and reliable. This is the difference between health food and general food. (3) Health food is suitable for specific groups of people, and generally needs to be consumed by people according to the product description, which is another important difference between health food and general food.
(4) Health food is also different from medicinal dietary products, black food, green food, new resource food, etc. Medicinal dietary products are guided by the treatment theory of syndrome differentiation theory of traditional Chinese medicine, which is compatible with traditional Chinese medicine and food, and is processed into food with good color, fragrance and shape. Black food refers to a type of food that has a certain regulation of human physiological functions and has been scientifically processed by darker natural color, richer nutrition and more reasonable structure. Green food refers to pollution-free, safe and high-quality food, and some are called ecological food, organic food, and natural food.
